I am
fascinated by an unexplored space between the formal and informal,
the visual image and the written or spoken word, the inevitable
tension between one language and an other that can be detected in
the challenge of translation. The notion of imitation rather then
representation of experience is strongly emphasised which links
it to the concept of 'mimesis' which 'presumes a continuum between
the actuality of the world and the production of signs about that
world'.
However there is a destroyed relationship between the signifier
and signified. Through the experimental use of language I open up
the possibility for new associations within a recognisable frame.
Speaking Italian and German from childhood made language and its
'cause and effect' an important aspect of existential negotiation
with the outer world in which I grew up. It was then that language
proved to be an inadequate tool to communicate the subtlety and
ambivalence of meaning and I aspired to read between the lines and
started to pay increased attention to deferred meaning. It is the
threshold of perception where metaphor is placed. In particular
I explore 'poetics' in relation to notions of alienation, otherness,
transience of identity and personal mythology which I express through
both the visual image and text, and as fusion of the visual image
and text.
