My
work explores many media including sound
& art installations, film & video, radio, theatre
and multimedia work.
I am frustrated by the limitations and conventions in Britain
today imposed on one creative to another, 'a fine artist',
'a poet', 'an actor', 'a musician'...serving only as a definition
of a tradesman's craft. These labels and associated notions
build walls between the creative community. My mission is
to explore and work within different media and uncover ways
in which other art forms like visual art, theatre, film and
live art can interact with my primary media (music). The importance
of this mission is, firstly, to enrich my work as a performer
and , secondly, create a subterfuge whereby a 'non artist'
can penetrate and seed within an established creative community.
Radio
I was invited to produce a radio show for London's Resonance
FM entitled 'Into the Ether: Music of the theremin'. The
broadcast on November 3rd 2003 commemorated the 10th anniversary
of the death of its genius inventor, Leon Theremin. I was
joined by special studio guest Bruce Wooley from the
Radio Science Orchestra and the shows included an interview
with filmmaker Steve Martin of 'Theremin: an electronic
oddity' fame. I not only produced the musical elements of
the show, but also a number of radio sound works comprising
3 x 5 minute monologue and ensemble radio piece which introduced
characters from the rich legacy of the instrument's 80 year
history.
This show was the first in a series which became Switched
On, celebrating 125 years of electricity and a celebration
of early electronic music and its heroes and heroines. I will
remember doing this show forever as I got to meet my idols
through it - including a visit to the Swiss Alps to record
a 7 hour interview with Jean-Jacques Perrey, a musical
and spiritual guru, and one of the last interview before the
sad death of Dr. Bob Moog, another genius and personal
inspiration.

On radio shows.
Installations
I joined with Edinburgh based visual and textile artist Mary
Trodden to produce an installation work combining Mary's
ominous doll creations with Hypnotique's equally ominous theremin
installation which uses highly processed synthesizer loops
combined with a theremin based controller which will vary
the sound depending on the density and temperature of the
studio.
The installation was part of an open studio event on Sunday
16th November 2003 at Forest Studios, Bruce Grove,
London N17. For photos, visit the forest
studios website.
Sound compositions
I
originally trained at the BEAST Electro-acoustic studios
in Birmingham where I began creating 'sound works' which combine
narrative elements with computer music, using purely environment
recorded sound sources. I continue to record both 'sound works'
and experimental music compositions, as well as using an unconventional
sonic approach to the recording of songs by emphasising unusual
instruments and sound production against traditional song
structures. I am influenced by 'tape loop' and music concrete
composers who crossed over into commercial music like Jean-Jacques
Perrey and Pierre Henry.
