Background
I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Conservatoire, where I specialised in clarinet performance, amongst other subjects. I am a practising musician, specialising mainly in the electronic oddity of the theremin as Britain leading player, performing a range of music including classical, cabaret and avant-garde giving performance for TV, radio, theatre, arts clubs and academic. I also do recording sessions and play with numerous bands - mainly alternative rock but also involved in funk jazz, free improv, contemporary classical, dance theatre, electronica and other styles. I tour and gig periodically and have played shows in Germany, Switzerland, USA and UK.
Teaching Methods
I have taught many students of different
ages from five to adult and different backgrounds. I am willing to taken on
any student who is enthusiastic to learn an instrument and willing to put in
the time to their own development to make the partnership mutually rewarding.
I work on as many aspects of musicianship as the lesson time will allow, working
on technique and technical exercises, score and sight reading, repertoire, aural
and improvisation and developing composition ideas. I am myself from a classically
trained turned popular/jazz musical background and prefer to teach both schools
of ideas together by focusing on the core elements of musicianship and a range
of contrasting repertoire tailored to suit the individual student. I don't teach
jazz or classical style exclusively.
Exams - I am willing to take on students who are already studying for practical
or theory music exams and have taught several students through music exams.
I will only tutor exam students at the request of the student (not the student's
parents) if they feel it is something which would be useful for their own development
or for future academic requirements or for entry to a music group or school.
